"Oh shaig!"

“It’s true. You will see.”

She slipped sideways onto the ground, bringing her feet out in front of her. She leaned back on her hands to stare at the sky. “At least, I hope I get to see it. I hope to meet them. To see their goodness. To see the salvation of our world personified. Yeah, if that could happen in my lifetime, that is what I would wish for. That is my dream.”

With her face mere inches from his, he found it hard to think, to breathe.

“How might I ever repay you?”

Her gaze dipped to his lips for just a moment, though it was long enough to set his heart thudding. Hammering like a rabbit warning. He glanced at her full, pink lips. Her breathing hitched then spread up. The rhythm of it causing her chest to brush into his. A knot twisted in his stomach.

“It was my plegger…” He ducked his head, recovering quickly. “I mean, my pleasure.”

Eyes gleaming, Val asked, “Where did you learn elvish?”

Dar, still beaming merrily, answered breathlessly, “From Memsy the sorci. She lives due east of the village. She helps the villagers with medicines and such. She only taught me the words to greet the creatures of Sheorae.”

“She doesn’t live in Tymalia?”

Dar shook her head. “She says she has nothing to fear from this world but loneliness.”

She held her arm aloft to study the froggy critters more closely, before adding a forlorn, “I think I know how she may feel.”
